Valsartan Recall

Have you or a loved one been prescribed Valsartan and were later diagnosed with a Liver Injury, or cancer, including Liver Cancer, Kidney Cancer or Lung Cancer?

If so, contact the Jacoby & Meyers Mass Torts Law Group NOW!

The drug Valsartan is used to control high blood pressure and prevent heart failure.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that various manufacturers have voluntarily recalled Valsartan due to an impurity that could lead to cancer, based the presence of NDMA, a known carcinogenic agent.

What is N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA)?

NDMA is an organic chemical compound that has been labeled as a probable human carcinogen, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).  Significantly, NDMA can be produced through chemical reactions that occur in the manufacturing process.

NMDA exposure has also been associated with non-cancerous liver damage, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.

“The FDA assessed the valsartan-containing medications sold in the United States, and found that the Valsartan sold by specific companies does not meet our safety standards,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

The initial recall included Valsartan from pharmaceutical companies, Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare and Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd.  Solco and Teva were also asked to recall their drugs containing valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ).   Since that time, the recall has been expanded to include Teva Pharmaceuticals USA labeled as Actavis, AvKARE , Remedy Repack, A-S Medication Solutions LLC,  Bryant Ranch Prepack Inc.,  H J Harkins Company, Proficient Rx LP Northwind Pharmaceutical and Torrent Pharmaceutical have been added to the recall list.

If you are currently taking Valsartan, you should contact their physician immediately.  Any decision to take or curtail use of Valsartan, or any medication, should be done in consultation with a qualified physician – based upon all disclosed facts regarding the efficacy of the drug.
