Ziprasidone is prescribed to patients who suffer from schizophrenia in order to eliminate symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and depression. It can also be used to treat severe mania or mixed episodes in people who have bipolar disorder. This medication is an atypical antipsychotic; it changes brain chemistry to eliminate psychotic symptoms.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication should not be prescribed for elderly patients who suffer from psychotic dementia. Elderly patients who take this medication are more likely to die of a heart attack or heart failure. Elderly patients who take Ziprasidone may also die of viral infections like pneumonia.
