Valganciclovir
Valganciclovir is prescribed to patients who are suffering from cytomegalovirus retinitis as a result of HIV. This virus can cause blindness if not treated appropriately. The medication can also be used to prevent this disease in people whose immune systems are being suppressed after transplant surgery.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause serious blood diseases because it lowers the amount of blood cells your body produces. You may suffer from anemia due to loss of red blood cells or further compromise your immune system due to loss of white blood cells. You also may have a low platelet count, which causes excessive bleeding.
This medication has been shown to cause infertility and birth defects in laboratory animals, so people who are planning to start a family should not take this medication.
