Trimetrexate
Trimetrexate is used to treat a bacterial infection in patients whose immune system is compromised, such as those who suffer from HIV or those on immunosuppressive drugs. This medication resembles a nutrient needed for growth so that infected cells absorb it and die. Patients take this medication in conjunction with leucovrin in order to allow healthy cells to keep growing.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication is not available in the United States. Patients who are currently on it should be put on a different medication as soon as possible.
It’s important to take leucovrin with this medication. If leucovrin is not taken, normal cell growth is inhibited, which can cause serious illness or death.
