Triameterene is sometimes given in conjunction with other medications, most notably hydrochlorothiazide, to treat edema and high blood pressure. This medication is a diuretic; it works by eliminating excessive water from the body in order to reduce blood pressure. It should be taken once a day, preferably in the morning, in order to allow the person to urinate frequently.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication is a diuretic, which means that urination will be frequent. It’s best to take it in the morning in order to avoid interruptions in sleep. Patients need to have access to a toilet frequently while on this medication.
There’s a risk of dehydration from loss of too much fluid while on this medication. Contact your doctor immediately if you feel dizzy, extremely fatigued, nauseated or have an unusually dry mouth or extreme thirst.
Patients who have kidney problems may develop low potassium as a result of taking Triameterene. Taking it in combination with hydrochlorothiazide can help minimize this risk.
