Tacrolimus (Topical)
Tacrolimus ointment is sometimes prescribed for patients who have eczema, a skin condition that results in dry, itchy skin or scaly rashes. This ointment is applied to skin when other treatments for eczema fail to improve the skin’s condition. It works by interfering with immune system function so that the immune system doesn’t produce substances that contribute to eczema.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients who are on this medication may have a greater risk of developing skin cancer or lymphoma. Thus, patients should only use the medication for as long as it is needed in order to cure eczema in order to decrease their risk. If your eczema returns or it does not improve after six weeks, contact your doctor to talk about alternative treatment options.
