Some people who are on chemotherapy may need to take Rasburicase injections. As chemotherapy breaks up tumors, patients may experience a build-up of uric acid in the blood. Rasburicase helps break uric acid down into elements that the body can eliminate so that the acid doesn’t continue to build up in the blood and cause serious health problems.
Some patients are highly allergic to this drug. If you experience swelling or itching in the face, tongue or throat after taking this medication, have any difficulty breathing or develop rashes or hives, you may be experiencing a serious allergic reaction. Get immediate medical assistance.
This medication can also cause serious blood disease. Patients who are of African or Mediterranean descent are more likely to get blood diseases after taking Rasburicase. Symptoms of blood problems include lightheadness, dizziness, dark urine, headache, paleness, jaundice, chills and fatigue.
