Propoxyphene is a pain reliever that can be taken to relieve mild to moderate pain. It contains narcotic strength painkillers as well as acetaminophen. These drugs used in combination help block pain impulses and relieve pain.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication was withdrawn from the market in November 2010 because of safety concerns. The combination of opioids and acetaminophen in this drug can be fatal if taken in high doses, especially if taken in conjunction with other depressant drugs such as alcohol or anti-anxiety medications. Patients who have drug or alcohol addiction problems are at particular risk of a fatal overdose or of other problems related to abuse of this medication.
