Propafenone is an antiarrhythmic drug. It strengthens the heart muscle in order to help the heart beat steadily rather than irregularly. This medication is taken orally once or twice a day to keep the heart beating at a steady rate.
Patients who have had a heart attack within the last two years or who suffer from other heart disease should not take this medication. This medication increases the chances that people in these categories will have a fatal heart attack.
This medication should only be given to patients who have life-threatening arrhythmias because of the risk of fatal heart attack.
