Patients who take insulin at mealtimes to control diabetes might also take pramlintide with their meals. This medication helps keep blood sugar levels under control by slowing down the rate at which food is digested. This keeps blood sugar from rising as much and may also decrease appetite and lead to weight loss. This medication is usually prescribed for patients who can’t keep blood sugar levels down in other ways.
Side Effects/Warnngs
Some patients may experience a severe drop in blood sugar as a result of taking this medication. Patients who have type 1 diabetes are at greater risk of this occurring. Blood sugar drops may occur within three hours of taking this medication. They also are more likely to occur if you skip a meal, are more active than usual or are too sick to eat. Drinking alcohol may lower blood sugar while on this medication. Get emergency medical help if you have any of the following symptoms of low blood sugar:
