Patients who need blood transfusions are often given pooled plasma that is SD treated. This medication is safer than non-treated blood because it kills certain viruses that might be found in donated blood. However, it does not protect blood transfusion recipients against the HIV virus.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients who have severe liver disease or who are candidates for liver transplant should not be given this type of blood transfusion. These patients may suffer from excessive bleeding after receiving SD treated plasma. The excessive bleeding may occur during liver transplants or due to liver disease; in some cases, it is fatal.
