Penicillin G benzathine and procaine are injectable forms of penicillin that are used to treat bacterial infections. This medication is injected into a muscle slowly and steadily once a day for a period of several days in order to kill bacteria that are causing serious infections. The medication may be given by a doctor in a hospital setting; patients may also be taught to self-inject the medication at home.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients should only take this medication for infections that require its use. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can cause bacteria to become resistant to medication, making infections harder to treat.
The medication should be taken for the full amount of time it is prescribed for in order to prevent recurrence of infection. Patients who self-inject should be taught how to safely use and dispose of needles. When injecting this medication, it is important to do it in a muscle rather than a vein.
