Oxymetholone is an anabolic steroid medication that is sometimes used to treat anemia, a condition in which the body does not produce enough red blood cells. This medication is a synthetic version of male hormones that are used to stimulate red blood cell production in men. Patients take this medication orally once a day; they should take it at the same time every day and take it with food or milk to prevent stomach upset.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause blood-filled cysts to develop on the liver as well as liver tumors. In some cases, cyst development is concurrent with liver failure. Stopping the use of this drug causes cysts and tumors to disappear in most cases; however, in a small number of cases, patients develop malignant liver cancer as a result of taking the drug. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any signs of liver disease such as yellowing of the eyes and skin, severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting or extreme fatigue.
