Oxybate, Sodium

Sodium oxybate is a central nervous system depressant that helps patients with narcolepsy avoid attacks of sudden muscle weakness. It is not yet clear how this medication prevents such attack. The medication is taken on an empty stomach twice during the night so that patients can sleep without experiencing attacks of cataplexy–sudden, short-term muscle weakness.

Side Effects/Warnings

This medication is highly addictive and abuse of it is very popular among young people who go to bars. Patients who are prescribed the medication for a legitimate medical need must keep in a secure location to avoid theft by curious people and addicts. Never share this medication with anyone else in order to avoid fatal overdoses and other problems.

Never change the dosage of your medication without talking to your doctor. Overdosing on this medication can cause you to stop breathing or cause your heart to stop beating, resulting in death. Suddenly stopping or lowering the dose can cause withdrawal effects.
