Oxandrolone
Patients who are extremely underweight because of surgery, illness or other reasons sometimes take oxandrolone to help them gain weight. This medication is used in conjunction with a healthy diet and an exercise plan to help patients become a healthy weight. This medication can also be used to treat pain in patients with osteoporosis or to reduce side effects of corticosteroid anti-inflammatory drugs.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause both liver disease and liver tumors. Patients who have a history of liver disease might not want to take this medication because of the risk; in addition, patients who regularly drink a lot of alcohol or who have recovered from alcoholism shouldn’t take this drug. You should call your doctor right away if you have symptoms of liver disease such as:
- Jaundice
- Loss of appetite
- Extreme fatigue
- Upset stomach or stomach pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Brown urine or black tarry stools
