Norgestimate/Estradiol (Oral)

Norgestimate and Estradiol are female hormones that are prescribed together to postmenopausal women. This medication helps raise hormonal levels in women who have gone through menopause so that their estrogen level remains similar to what it was prior to menopause.

Side Effects/Warnings

Women who have heart disease or a family history of heart disease should exercise caution when taking this medication. Norgestimate can contribute to heart attacks and strokes in postmenopausal women. Women who smoke are at greater risk than those who do not.

This medication also contributes to breast cancer, so women should get regular breast cancer screenings once they begin taking it. Women over the age of 65 risk memory loss and dementia if they take this medication.
