Mestranol is sometimes combined with Norethindrone in order to make birth control pills. This form of birth control uses female hormones to stop the body from releasing eggs and to help block sperm from fertilizing eggs. It also makes the uterus wall thinner to stop any eggs that do become fertilized from implanting.
Smoking while on this medication can be fatal. Women who smoke have an increased risk of heart attack or stroke while on birth control pills. Women over the age of 35 also have a greater risk of heart attack or stroke while on this medication, as do those who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day.
Do not use this medication in order to protect yourself against AIDS or other STDs. This medication only prevents pregnancy.
