Norethindrone is often prescribed in combination with estradiol to help postmenopausal women regain their hormone balance. This medication raises estrogen to pre-menopausal levels. Side Effects/Warnings
Women who take this medication are at greater risk of having a stroke or a heart attack than women who don’t take it. Heart disease risk increases with age. In addition, women who smoke have a greater risk of heart attack or stroke while on this medication than women who don’t smoke.
All women on this medication should have regular checkups to ensure their heart is healthy. They also should have regular screenings for breast cancer, which is also linked to this medication. Finally, women over the age of 65 should be aware that they may suffer from dementia or memory loss as a result of taking this medication.
