Neomycin is an antibiotic medication that is prescribed to treat encephalopathy, a serious infection in the brain that is caused by buildup of ammonia in the body due to liver disease. This medication kills the bacteria that causes encephalopathy. It is also sometimes prescribed to prevent infection following intestinal surgery.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause both kidney and central nervous system damage. Some people permanently lose their hearing while on the medication. Patients who are older, who already have kidney disease or who have dehydration problems are more likely to suffer from these side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you feel dizzy, urinate less frequently than often, develop hearing problems or have ringing in your ears while on this medication.
