Misoprostol is used to protect the stomach against the side effects of pain medications that cause ulcers. It is usually used by arthritis patients and patients who take aspirin. The medication decreases the amount of stomach acid the body secretes and coats the stomach lining to protect it from ulcers.
This medication is also sometimes used to induce labor in pregnant women or to induce a miscarriage in women who want to terminate their pregnancies.
Side Effects/Warnings
Do not take this medication if you are capable of becoming pregnant. Misoprostol causes severe birth defects and increases the likelihood of miscarriage or premature labor. Contact your doctor immediately if you think you have become pregnant while on this medication. You cannot safely conceive until you are off the medication for 14 days.
