Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine is prescribed to patients who suffer from chronic depression or severe depression. This medication adjusts the levels of brain chemicals to help elevate mood and promote mental health and balance.

Side Effects/Warnings

Patients may experience more severe depression and suicidal thoughts leading to self-harming behavior. Younger patients are at greater risk of this side effect than older patients. This medication should not be used on pediatric patients. All patients should be monitored for suicide risk.

This drug causes changes in brain chemistry that require continued use of the drug for normal functioning. Patients who want to stop using this drug should taper off it rather than quitting cold turkey in order to avoid serious and potentially fatal side effects.
