Metoprolol is a beta blocker that is often used to treat high blood pressure. It may or may not be used in combination with other blood pressure medications. This medication is also prescribed to patients who have suffered a heart attack to protect them against a potentially fatal second heart attack and can be used to treat heart failure. Metoprolol helps relax the blood vessels and slow the heart rate in order to lower blood pressure.
Side Effects/Warnings
Patients should not abruptly stop taking this medication. Sudden withdrawal of this medication can cause patients to have a heart attack or to suffer from severe chest pain. If a patient wants to stop taking the medication for any reason, he or she should gradually withdraw from it while under the supervision of a doctor.
