Methyldopa/thiazide Combinations

Methyldopa and hydrochlorothiazide are sometimes prescribed together to treat high blood pressure. These medications help relax the blood vessels and remove excessive fluids and salts from the body in order to help lower blood pressure.

Side Effects/Warnings

You should not take iron supplements or vitamins containing iron at the same time as you take these medications. Iron supplements can raise blood pressure and negate the effect of the medication.

This medication can cause liver or kidney disease. It may also lower blood pressure too much and may dehydrate patients. Call your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Swelling of the feet or ankles
  • Jaundice
  • Fever
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Muscle cramps
