Patients who suffer from vitiligo, a skin condition that makes the skin appear whiter than normal, may use topical Methoxsalen to help them reverse this condition. Health care professionals apply the cream to the skin prior to giving the patient UV light treatments. This medication works in combination with the UV light treatments to help stimulate pigment production in the skin and return color to it.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause severe burns if it is used improperly. It should only be applied by a medical professional who is trained in its use. It should not be left up to the patient to put it on. The medication should also only be used as part of UV light treatment in a health care setting; it should not be put on before going to a tanning salon or getting sunlight outdoors.
