Lithium is prescribed to patients who suffer from bipolar disorder to help stabilize their moods and stop manic episodes. This medication changes the way sodium flows through the nerves and muscles so that the patient is less prone to manic episodes. The medication is also prescribed to help control schizophrenia, irresistible impulses and other mental illnesses. This medication is taken orally several times a day.
This medication can be toxic at therapeutic levels. Many patients have to take a lower dose than recommended in order to avoid emotional numbness, a metallic taste, muscle weakness, seizures and lethargy.
