Levonorgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol(Oral)

Levonorgestrel tablets are used to prevent accidental pregnancy after having unprotected sex. Patients who are over the age of 17 can get these tablets without a prescription. They are to be taken only on an emergency basis; they are not a substitute for regular birth control.

Side Effects/Warnings

This medication can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke in women who smoke. Heavy smokers are at greater risk than light smokers, but it is best not to smoke at all in order to prevent these diseases. Women over the age of 35 are at greater risk of heart attack or stroke while on this medication than younger women.

Levonorgestrel does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, patients should use another form of birth control along with this medication to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
