Leflunomide is taken daily to help control joint pain, inflammation, tenderness and stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis. This medication helps slow down the progress of this disease in addition to reducing inflammation. This allows patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis to move more easily and to exercise. This drug may be given in conjunction with other arthritis drugs.
This medication can harm developing fetuses. Women should not attempt to become pregnant for two years following the end of treatment with this medication in order to protect their unborn children from severe birth defects.
Leflunomide also causes life-threatening liver disease. Call your doctor immediately if you experience severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, brown urine, jaundice or black, tarry stools.
