Ketoconazole (oral)
Ketoconazole is prescribed to treat fungal infections. It is most commonly used to stop the spread of yeast infections to other parts of the body from the mouth, skin or urinary tract. It may also be used to treat fungal infections in the skin and nails that don’t respond to other medications.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause liver disease, which in some cases may be fatal. Patients who currently suffer from liver disease or who have ever abused alcohol should not take this medication because of its negative effects on the liver. In addition, patients should call their doctors immediately if they have any of the following symptoms:
- Jaundice
- Brown urine
- Tarry black stools
- Severe nausea and vomiting
- Severe stomach pains
