Kanamycin (parenteral)
Kanamycin is an antibiotic medication that is used to treat serious bacterial infections. This medication is injected into a muscle or vein. It is slowly infused into your system over the course of 60 minutes. You may be taught to inject the medication yourself at home or may have it injected at a hospital. You need to keep getting injections until the full course of medication is completed in order to avoid a resurgence of infection.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can be toxic to the kidneys. Patients should have regular kidney function tests while on this medication and should contact their doctor right away if they experience difficulty with urination and pain in their lower backs.
This medication can also have negative effects on the central nervous system. Symptoms of nerve problems include hearing loss and ringing in the ears, dizziness and difficulties with balance.
