Patients who suffer from chronic depression that does not respond to other medications may be prescribed isocarboxazid. This medication works by increasing natural substances in the brain that contribute to mental health and well-being in order to eliminate feelings of depression, guilt, sadness and anger.
Side Effects/Warnings
Some patients may experience worse depression while on this medication. Patients may have suicidal thoughts or feelings or engage in self-harming behavior. Younger patients (those under the age of 24) are more likely to have this side effect than older patients. However, all patients should be monitored carefully for suicidal thoughts and feelings.
