Idarubicin
Patients who suffer from acute myelocytic leukemia may be given idarubicin injections. This medication is an antibiotic used only for the purpose of chemotherapy. It helps kill bacteria that contribute to the growth of cancer cells.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause a severe drop in white blood cells. As a result, patients may become susceptible to infections that the immune system would normally eliminate. You need immediate medical attention if you develop a fever, chills or sore throat while on this medication.
Patients with heart disease should be cautious about using this medication because it causes heart damage and heart failure. Patients who have previously used a similar type of chemotherapeutic antibiotic are at increased risk of heart failure from this medication.
