Patients who have an irregular heartbeat might take ibutilide. This medication slows down electrical activity in the heart to stop the heart from beating irregularly.
Side Effects/Warnings
Some patients’ heartbeats become more irregular instead of less while on this medication. In some cases, the heart can beat so irregularly as to become fatal. Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you experience a pounding heartbeat, chest pain, difficulty breathing or loss of consciousness.
Some patients may have a severe allergic reaction to this medication that includes swelling of the face, mouth or tongue and difficulty breathing. Seek emergency treatment if you have any of these symptoms.
