Hydromorphone Hydrochloride (High Potency Injection)

Patients on round-the-clock painkillers who are getting less of an effect from the narcotics might benefit from high-potency hydromorphone hydrochloride injections. This medication provides additional pain relief to these patients. It is a more concentrated type of hydromorphone than the painkillers patients may already be on.

Side Effects/Warnings

The high potency injection is much more concentrated, which makes it more potent; thus, it is not interchangeable with regular hydromorphone. Providing this medication to patients who are not opioid tolerant can result in a fatal overdose.

This medication has a high potential for abuse; patients who have ever had problems with drug addiction, especially if they were addicted to narcotic drugs, should avoid taking it if at all possible.
