Ferrous fumarate is an iron supplement that is often used to treat iron deficiency anemia. This medication is taken orally on an empty stomach; it comes in pill or liquid form. Liquid ferrous fumarate can be mixed with fruit juice before being taken.
This medication can be fatal to children because it causes their iron levels to rise too high. The medication should be kept out of children’s reach and patients should call 911 if a child accidentally ingests the medication.
This medication can cause an iron overdose. Call your doctor immediately if you have bright red blood in your stools or pain in your throat or chest while taking the medication. Less severe side effects include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain and staining of the teeth.
