Medroxypreogesterone Acetate is an oral contraceptive that women can take in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies. This medication consists of female hormones similar to those the body produces when it is pregnant. This stops ovulation. It also causes the cervical wall to thicken and the lining of the uterus to become thinner in order to prevent eggs from becoming fertilized or attaching to the uterus.
Side Effects/Warnings
Although this medication contains progesterone, which makes it safer than medications that only contain estrogen, women who take it are at increased risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, heart attack and stroke. Women should quit smoking and see their doctor regularly to reduce their risks.
