Conjugated Estrogens A, Synthetic (Vaginal, Oral)
Synthetic estrogen is often used in birth control pills. It may also be used to correct low estrogen among women who have lower than normal levels either following menopause or prior to menopause. Women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome may also be prescribed this medication.
Warnings/Side Effects
- Synthetic estrogen carries the same cancer risks as other types of estrogen. Women who take this medication may be at increased risk for:
- Breast cancer
- Cancer of the lining of the uterus
- Blood clots
- Heart attack
- Stroke
Women who smoke, have a history of cancer or heart disease, or have a family history of cancer or heart disease should be careful when taking this medication. Pregnant women should not take this medication, as it can harm the developing fetus.
