This medication is intended only for adults who have a severe iron deficiency. Adults who do not have chronically low iron levels should not take this medication. Similarly, women should not take the medication if they are pregnant or considering having children because it can be transmitted to the developing fetus and cause serious birth defects.

Some people may become nauseated while on this medication. Other side effects include diarrhea, constipation and stomach upset.
