Becaplermin
Becaplermin is a gel used to help people with diabetes heal sores in their legs, feet and ankles. The medication is applied directly to the sores for a period of time in order to facilitate healing. This medication is usually used as part of an ulcer care program rather than being the only treatment diabetic people get for their sores.
Warnings/Side Effects
There is a link between use of this gel and dying of cancer. Although it hasn’t been proven that Becaplermin causes cancer, people who use more than three tubes of this gel are more likely to die of cancer than cancer patients who don’t use this gel. Patients who have cancer or who have ever had cancer should inform their doctors so that this risk can be managed.
