Baclofen (Intrathecal)
Baclofen is a drug that is used to combat severe muscle spasms. People with multiple sclerosis often get a Bacelofen pump to infuse this drug into their system and help them with muscular and motion problems. People with spinal injuries may also use a Baclofen pump in order to help them preserve the ability to move.
Warnings/Side Effects
Baclofen pumps offer less risk of side effects than Baclofen tablets because they target the medication directly to the affected nerves. However, some patients still experience symptoms like the following:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Headaches
- Nausea
- General weakness
In addition, the pump needs to be refilled at regular intervals. It’s important to make sure that the pump is continuously filled because abrupt withdrawal from this medication can cause muscular rigidity, which is fatal in some cases.
