Azilsartan is an ACE inhibitor drug. This drug helps lower blood pressure by inhibiting the production of an enzyme that causes the arteries to narrow. Without this enzyme, arteries widen, which tends to lower blood pressure and reduce the patient’s risk of heart attack or stroke.
Warnings/Side Effects
ACE inhibitors like Azilsartan are fatal to fetuses. Women who are pregnant should not take this drug, as their children may die in the womb. Women who are capable of bearing children should have a monthly pregnancy test and stop using this drug if they become pregnant.
There is also a risk that blood pressure will drop too low as a result of taking this drug. If this happens, patients feel dizzy and lightheaded. Patients should inform their doctor as soon as possible after a low blood pressure episode so that medication can be adjusted appropriately.
