Auronofin is a drug prescribed to help patients with rheumatoid arthritis manage pain so that they can complete their daily routines. This drug helps decrease pain in the joints throughout the day as well as morning stiffness so that patients can more easily move during the course of the day.
This drug contains gold, which is often toxic when taken in large quantities. The longer a patient takes this medication, the more likely he or she is to suffer from gold toxicity. Symptoms of this serious problem include:
- A metallic taste in the mouth
- Stomach pain, nausea and vomiting
- Hair loss
This medication can also cause damage to organs such as the kidneys and heart, so patients who have other serious diseases should not take it, and all patients should be monitored for signs of these diseases.
