Aripiprazole is an anti-psychotic drug that is sometimes prescribed for people with schizophrenia or other severe mental illnesses. It is sometimes also prescribed to relieve depression and can also be used to help elderly people who exhibit symptoms of dementia.
Elderly people who take this drug to prevent dementia often suffer from fatal cardiovascular events such as heart attacks. This population is also at increased risk of fatal pneumonia or other infections while on this drug.
Some patients develop suicidal feelings while on this drug. Patients should be monitored closely for signs of suicidal depression in order to prevent them from harming themselves.
