Alvimopan is a drug used after surgery to help prevent side effects of narcotic painkillers without negating the painkilling effects of these drugs. It is often used after gastrointestinal surgery to prevent stomach pain, nausea, bloating and bleeding that can delay healing from this type of surgery.
Patients who are allergic to Alvimopan may experience severe side effects such as swelling in the tongue, face and throat, which can make it difficult to breathe. They may also experience hives or rashes. If you experience any of these side effects, get emergency medical help.
Some patients also experience other serious side effects that can indicate kidney or liver disease. You should get medical treatment immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Difficulty or pain urinating or differences in frequency of urination
- Muscle weakness or extreme fatigue
- Bruising or bleeding more easily than usual
