Acetylcysteine is a medication that helps lessen mucous secretions when inhaled. This medication helps people with pneumonia, bronchitis and other diseases that interfere with normal lung function to clear their lungs of mucous and breathe more easily. This medication can also be given orally to help counteract toxic effects of an acetaminophen overdose.

Warnings/Side Effects

This drug can cause nausea and vomiting. It can also cause rarer and more serious side effects such as:

  • Black stools
  • Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Chest pain/tightness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rash
  • Itching and swelling (especially in the face)
  • Severe dizziness
