AbobotulinumtoxinA is used to treat spasms in the head and neck as well as to help eradicate frown lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. This medication needs to be injected on an irregular basis in order to keep symptoms from returning.

Warnings/Side Effects

AbobotulinumtoxinA contains a toxin that can spread from the injection site to elsewhere in the body. If the toxin spreads, it can cause serious side effects such as:

• Generalized muscle weakness
• Blurred vision
• Difficulty speaking or difficulty speaking clearly
• Urinary incontinence
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing 

Some of these side effects are life threatening and require medical intervention. Patients should seek medical help immediately if they have difficulty breathing or swallowing.

This medication is not approved for use in children or in people over the age of 65 because of the potential side effects.
