Cyclosporine is one of several organ transplant medications patients take after receiving a kidney, heart or liver transplant. This medication temporarily suppresses the immune system in order to ensure that the body accepts the new organ rather than treating it as a foreign invader and attempting to eliminate it.
Warnings/Side Effects
There are two different types of this medication, and they are each absorbed differently by the body. Patients should only use the type of Cyclosporine they are prescribed in order to ensure they take the right dose.
Using this medication increases the risk that you will get skin cancer or lymphoma. You are also at risk for infections and illnesses because the medication compromises your immune system.
Cyclosporine can also cause kidney or heart damage. You should not take this medication if you already suffer from these illnesses.
