Patients who have high blood pressure might be prescribed amiloride. This medication is a diuretic; it decreases blood pressure by eliminating excessive fluids from the body. It is usually used in conjunction with other high blood pressure medications, especially other diuretics. It can also be used to treat water retention associated with other conditions, most notably congestive heart failure or liver disease.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause elevated potassium levels, especially in patients who are elderly or who have diabetes or kidney disease. It’s important to limit intake of foods rich in potassium while on this medication to avoid potentially serious side effects. Symptoms of potassium overdose include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat and fatigue. You should also call your doctor immediately if you have any signs of dehydration from water loss such as excessive thirst, dizziness, headaches or nausea.
