Adefovir is an anti-viral drug used to treat Hepatitis B. This medication doesn’t cure hepatitis but can be used to keep this disease under control. It stops infected cells from multiplying and continuing to attack the body, particularly the liver.
Warnings/Side Effects
Patients are at increased risk for a relapse of hepatitis after discontinuing this medication. Adefovir isn’t a cure for hepatitis; patients should remain under the care of a doctor and be monitored regularly for a resurgence of hepatitis.
Some patients experience kidney failure or other serious kidney problems while on Adefovir. Patients’ kidney function should be monitored while on this drug.
Patients should get an HIV test prior to beginning this medication because this drug can cause HIV resistance in patients that suffer from untreated HIV, making anti-HIV drugs less effective when the patient is eventually treated.
