Warfarin is a blood thinning medication that is prescribed to patients who have life-threatening blood clots in their legs, heart or lungs. It is also used to help treat irregular heartbeat and help promote heart health after a heart attack. This medication helps break up blood clots and decreases the ability of the blood to form clots.
Warnings/Side Effects
People who take this medication are at increased risk of excessive bleeding because their blood doesn’t clot appropriately. Patients who are over the age of 65 or who take Warfarin for a long period of time are at greater risk of internal bleeding or excessive external bleeding. It is important to avoid other blood thinning medications, including aspirin, while on this medication. Patients should also avoid drinking alcohol while on this medication because alcohol is a blood thinner.
