Trazodone is an antidepressant medication that is often prescribed to patients who have severe, chronic or debilitating depression. It is also sometimes prescribed to patients who are withdrawing from antianxiety medications to help relieve withdrawal symptoms. This medication increases the amount of serotonin in the body in order to prevent depression and create a sense of mental balance, well-being and peace.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause some people to become more depressed. There have been cases of people who became suicidal or committed suicide after taking this medication. Suicidal thoughts, feelings and behavior are more common during the first few weeks of taking the medication and more common in younger people (those under age 24). However, anyone who is on this medication should be monitored for suicidal tendencies.
